Texas Vaccines For Children - Letter from Texas Department of State Health Services regarding ACIP Recommendation on Flumist
Texas Department of State Health Services
June 28, 2016
Dear Texas Vaccines for Children Providers,
On June 22, 2016, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted against the use of live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV), also known as the “nasal spray” flu vaccine, or FluMist ® , for the upcoming 2016-2017 flu season. The ACIP vote follows data showing poor or relatively lower effectiveness of LAIV from 2013 through 2016, as compared to other available flu vaccine formulations. Despite this change, the ACIP continues to recommend annual flu vaccination, with either the inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) or recombinant influenza vaccine (RIV) for everyone 6 months of age and older.
Texas Vaccines for Children (TVFC) Providers who pre-booked LAIV (FluMist ® ) will be receiving a survey from the TVFC Program to modify pre-book preferences. All surveys must be completed no later than 12:00 pm (CST) on Wednesday, July 13, 2016. Each TVFC Provider who does not complete the survey will receive an alternate formulation determined by the TVFC Program. The TVFC Program will make every effort to fulfill a provider’s request for the flu vaccine formulation(s) requested.
Thank you for your continued support of the TVFC Program. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at (800) 252-9152.
